Florida registration is not one flat fee, and the number on the fee schedule is not the number you pay. The Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles department (FLHSMV) lists a base vehicle tax by weight and type, and adds a set of other fees on top. FLHSMV’s License Plate Rate Chart (form HSMV 83140, revision 08/26) shows the annual tax and other fees together. For a private passenger car that is $27.60, $35.60 or $45.60 a year depending on weight. This guide gives both numbers, the extra one-time fees, and the three ways to renew.
What you pay each year: the FLHSMV rate chart
The rate chart’s column “annual tax and other fees” is the practical number. The base vehicle tax on the FLHSMV fee page is part of it.
| Vehicle (rate chart class) | Net weight | Base vehicle tax, fee page | Annual tax and other fees, rate chart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automobile, private use (01) | Through 2,499 lb | $14.50 | $27.60 |
| Automobile, private use (01) | 2,500 to 3,499 lb | $22.50 | $35.60 |
| Automobile, private use (01) | 3,500 lb and up | $32.50 | $45.60 |
| Truck, private and commercial use (31) | Through 1,999 lb | $14.50 | $27.60 |
| Truck, private and commercial use (31) | 2,000 to 3,000 lb | $22.50 | $35.60 |
| Truck, private and commercial use (31) | 3,001 to 5,000 lb | $32.50 | $45.60 |
| Motorcycle (65) | Any | $10.00 | $24.10 |
| Antique passenger car (95) | Any | $7.50 | $20.60 |
The chart adds the tax to a list of smaller fees (for example emergency medical services, air pollution control, accident records, a service charge and a state transportation fee). The chart lists the fee names but shows only the combined column, so use that column for your total rather than adding fees yourself. The chart also lists motor homes, mobile homes, trailers, buses and other classes. Heavier trucks are priced by gross vehicle weight and by the number of months of tax due.
How many months you pay for
The chart’s instruction sheet says the 12-month registration period begins the first day of the owner’s birth month (company-owned vehicles use June). Where the chart shows annual, half-year and quarter-year rates, you count the months from the month of purchase through the month before the owner’s birth month. Three months or fewer takes the quarter-year rate, four to six months the half-year rate, and over six the full-year rate. For the private automobile and truck rows above, the chart shows one annual figure.
Other fees on the FLHSMV schedule
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Initial registration fee | $225.00, added on the first Florida registration of a private automobile, truck of 5,000 pounds or less or motor home |
| Original or replacement license plate | $28.00, added when a metal plate is issued |
| Commercial motor vehicle surcharge, vehicles 10,000 pounds or more | $10.00 |
The rate chart’s instruction sheet says the $225 initial registration fee does not apply to a renewal, to a plate transferred or exchanged to a newly acquired vehicle under the statute it cites, to a Florida title transferred between co-owners or by operation of law, or to a transfer of title from a person to a member of their immediate family (parents, children, spouse or surviving spouse, or a relative living in the same household). It also lists exemptions for certain military members and their families, government vehicles, farm “goats”, and ancient or antique vehicles.
FLHSMV also says that if you turn a plate in to a tax collector’s office you get a receipt, and if the initial registration fee was paid on the vehicle that plate was on, the receipt can be credited toward a future registration so you do not pay the initial registration fee again when you buy a new vehicle.
Title fees
The schedule states all title fees are for electronic titles. Add $2.50 service and handling when a paper title is printed. An additional $2 lien recording fee may also apply.
| Title fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Original, new vehicle | $77.25 |
| Original, used vehicle | $85.25 |
| Transfer or duplicate | $75.25 |
| Lien only (no transfer of ownership) | $74.25 |
| Fast title | $10.00 |
| Late title fee | $20.00 |
| Re-inspection fee | $20.00 |
How to renew
FLHSMV says you may renew for one or two years, up to three months before the registration expires. Registrations expire at midnight on the first owner’s birth date, unless the owner is a business.
| Way to renew | What FLHSMV says | Processing fee |
|---|---|---|
| Online, MyDMV Portal | One or two year renewals, duplicate registration if lost, credit card. Registration arrives by mail in 7 to 10 business days, and you can email yourself a confirmation receipt to use until then. | $2.00 added to the transaction |
| MyFlorida mobile app | Renew up to five vehicles or vessels at once for one or two years, with one processing fee. You need the plate number or VIN. | $4.00 for credit card, $3.75 for checking account, per transaction |
| In person at a motor vehicle service center | Any service center statewide. You get your registration the same day. | Not stated on the renewal page |
Online and in the app, if FLHSMV cannot verify valid insurance on the vehicle, no registration is issued. If a stop appears on the registration you have to go into an office or call FLHSMV Customer Service at (850) 617-2000. Since July 1, 2022, individuals with registration stops for toll violations cannot renew their registration or replace their plates until the toll violations are satisfied.
Put the registration decal in the square space in the upper right-hand corner of the Florida plate.
How to estimate your total
For a used passenger car you are titling for the first time in Florida, the pieces are: the annual tax and other fees from the rate chart, the $225 initial registration fee if it applies, the $28 plate fee if you need a metal plate, and the title fee. Our Florida fee estimator adds them for you. Tax collector offices may add their own service fees, which the FLHSMV chart does not list. The fee page mentions a $6.25 service fee on driver license credentials issued in a tax collector office and does not say it applies to vehicle transactions.
