New Jersey sets the basic registration fee for a passenger car by weight class and vehicle age. For the two classes that cover newer cars, the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) lists $46.50 to $84.00. Zero-emission vehicles pay an extra annual fee that started at $250 in July 2024 and rises $10 a year, and buying a car adds a $60 title fee and 6.625% sales tax.

How to read the table

Find your vehicle’s model group: 1970 or older, 1971 to 1979, or newer.
For newer vehicles, choose the row by weight: under 3,500 lbs or over 3,500 lbs. Commuter vans have their own row.
Choose “within 2 years” or “older than 2 years” for the vehicle’s age.

The MVC does not state, next to this table, how long the registration period is. Check your registration or renewal notice for the period and the total due.

Senior and disability reduction

People age 65 and older, and people with disabilities, pay $7.00 less than the amounts listed for all passenger vehicle categories.

Electric vehicles

The MVC says that under New Jersey law effective July 1, 2024, zero-emission vehicles pay an annual fee on top of the registration fee. The annual fee is $250 beginning July 1, 2024 and increases $10 per year for four years after that. It is payable in full at initial registration and at every renewal, and for a new zero-emission vehicle four years of the fee are due at initial registration.

Sales tax when you buy the car

If you buy a car, the Division of Taxation lists a sales tax rate of 6.625% on the purchase price of a new or used vehicle. On a $10,000 car that is $662.50. Gifts that are free and clear of any lien are exempt.
